Nelly Bay

Nelly Bay is the bustling hub of Magnetic Island and the arrival point for most visitors, with both the passenger ferry and car ferry docking at the Nelly Bay Ferry Terminal in the marina. As one of the island’s most convenient and well-serviced areas, Nelly Bay Magnetic Island is ideal for travellers who want easy access to shops, dining and transport while still enjoying a relaxed coastal atmosphere.

The beachfront is a popular spot for morning walks and leisurely swims, with picnic tables, public barbecues and a children’s playground along the shore. Just offshore, the marked Snorkel Trail begins around 100 metres from the beach, offering a chance to explore healthy coral and encounter a variety of marine life. With calm waters and clear visibility, it’s a great introduction to Magnetic Island’s fringing reefs.

Nelly Bay is also the island’s main service centre, home to two supermarkets (IGA and FoodWorks), a pharmacy, bakery, hardware store, clothing boutiques and plenty of cafés and restaurants. A public boat ramp is located along the breakwater for those wanting to get out on the water, and helipads are available for medical transfers and scenic flights. The Magnetic Island State School is also here.
