Picnic Bay Magnetic Island

Picnic Bay Magnetic Island

Picnic Bay was once the main hub of Magnetic Island, with ferries from Townsville docking at the now-historic Picnic Bay Jetty. Today it’s a quieter, more relaxed corner of the island, perfect for visitors seeking calm beaches, easy dining and a slower holiday rhythm. The Picnic Bay Mall is home to a little pocket of “Little Italy”, offering an Italian restaurant, café and tapas bar with shared outdoor dining and regular weekend live music.

The jetty remains a favourite spot for fishing, sunset views and taking in the sweeping outlook toward Townsville. Picnic Bay’s swimming enclosure operates during the summer months, and the beachfront is patrolled by lifeguards during the school holidays. Families also love the island’s only fully fenced playground, just across from the beach near the Picnic Bay Hotel.

History lovers can explore the Magnetic Island History and Craft Centre, while golfers can head to the iconic Magnetic Island Country Club. Legend has it, this is where Greg Norman first played golf.
